Thinking of finally getting a safe. I have 2 pistols and ammo at home and my wife does NOT love them there. In a safe would be another story (they are currently trigger locked). I was also thinking it would probably be a good idea to look into fire protection. This is the safe I was thinking about getting, but the reviews are bad with almost all of them being about the crappy lock. Ideally I would like to get something big enough for my guns and a moderate stack of paper and digital archives and I would like it for ~$300. I could forgo the fire part and get a gun safe, or I could get a small docs case and a small gun case, or I could spend more to get a more reputable safe. Anyone have suggestions?

I have a safe that’s big enough to hold two shotguns, a rifle, and some small items on a top shelf. I have a few issues with it. First, it isn’t fireproof (that I can tell). Second, it’s big enough to be in the way or get blocked by other stuff (which really just tells me that we need to clean out the closet). Third, the way the long guns stand in there is a bit awkward and they are on the verge of falling forward/out every time I open the door. The safe was free, so I guess I can’t really complain.
If your plan is to keep sensitive documents, watch the fire ratings on anything you select. When our house burned down, it got hot enough to melt my mom’s jewelry which was in the only part of the house that wasn’t completely turned to ashes. House fires get HOT.

I am of the conviction that guns should be kept in a safe or gun safe regardless of the other considerations .
We have a fireproof safe for our vital docs and valuables. Highly recommend fireproof as a priority.

I’d split the gun safe from the fireproof safe. You’d probably get higher quality splitting your tasks.

Thats where my head is right now. $160 for a decent size fireproof box (1.1 CUbic foot ) and $115 for the HF 1.51 gun safe that seems to be one of their loss leaders.

I used to work as a locksmith and can tell you any safe you can carry is not secure. If you just don’t want the kids in there that is fine but that’s all it will be good for. That and getting all you important things in one place to steal.

Yeah, this is just to keep kids out basically.

Also make sure if it's electric it can't be opened with a magnet. Most cheap ones you just put a strong magnet over the solenoid and it's open.

From the thumbnail I thought that was a picture of a bathroom door, and I was thinking “That’s my safe space, too!” ;)

Careful, a lot of the fire safes don’t actually offer any real security and can often be cut in half with a circular saw.
Lockbox bolted to the floor next to the bed with push button combo lock is where I’d go with it. Then practice unlocking it whilst groggy until it becomes second nature.
If you lived in Canada I’d suggest two boxes side by side, one for gun and one for magazines/ammo, as they’re not allowed to be locked in the same enclosure here because the lawmakers are vaginas.

I got this one for my 4 handguns to comply with foster regulations of double locked then got smaller lock boxes for the ammo per the regulations. I’m very happy with it, works well every time.

I have that safe I think actually, it comes with a kit to bolt it down. We have no kids and no crime around here so it’s mainly for keeping some things safe for fire.
